Leo’s Story
(by Melissa Finson) Eight years ago I was depressed, and in a very bad place. I walked into the shelter to meet a dog. He walked right past me and then did a second pass and walked right up to me and placed his head against my leg. He literally chose me. That was it; I had to adopt this dog. After I decided to adopt him they told me that he would have a whole host of trust issues and fear. They told me that he may never love anyone. He was used as a bait dog, thrown out of an SUV, and was intentionally backed over. He had never been in a home, never been near stairs, never been on carpet. We taught him it all. However, he taught me so much more daily. He began to love and trust me. We grew closer day after day. He taught me patience. He taught me love. He taught me to look at the world through love in your eyes and remember to open your heart. He taught me no matter what happened in your past you still deserve a second chance. This boy changed my life. Leo, the last 8 years that he gave me have literally saved me and were the best I could have ever asked for. I love you buddy. He was not just a dog. He was a friend, a companion, and my protector.
