Meet Rohn —  One Of The Beneficiaries Of Clinical Trials You Help Fund

From Our Executive Director, Ginger Morgan:

We’ve been busy this year at Puppy Up! We’ve traveled from the Northeast to the Northwest attending our PuppyUp Walks, educational meetings, and conferences. I sure enjoyed meeting our walk participants and donors. It is a blessing knowing that we have so much support.

I’d like you to meet Rohn. Because of your generosity he is one of the many participants in the clinical trials that we fund.  Rohn was adopted by Janet four years ago at the age of three. When he started limping back in the summer, she took him to The University of Wisconsin – Madison where he was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma (bone cancer). Rohn was enrolled in  Dr. Neil Christensen’s clinical trial on Stereotactic Radiation for dogs with Osteosarcoma. He then  underwent aggressive treatment involving 3 days of radiation followed up by 4 rounds of chemotherapy. He is now doing well, playing with his toys, and Janet is looking forward to spending many more holidays with him.

We are also funding clinical trials for lymphoma and bladder cancer. And next year we will begin funding a study on bone cancer that spreads to the lungs.

Please consider making a donation to help us continue to fund education, awareness and much needed research so families like Rohn’s can celebrate more holidays with their loved ones.

The Puppy Up Foundation and Founder Luke Robinson Launch Puppy Up Studios

Luke, Founder of The Puppy Up Foundation, with his Boys, Hudson and Indy.

From Luke Robinson, Founder of The Puppy Up Foundation

Welcome to Puppy Up Studios!

I’ve spent a lot of time and miles on the road this year learning and talking to walk leaders and pet parents, and engaging communities, and I’ve been working on a better way to communicate on a wider scale and broadcast to a bigger audience these experiences.

I’m building Puppy Up Studios as a collaborative and interactive platform for all of us as pet parents and look forward to involving all of you in the process.  Puppy Up and Talk Soon!

Backpacking 4,000 miles cross country after losing two dogs to cancer, I had a ton of time in our tent to think and ideate and this is the brainchild of all of those many lonely (well, I had the Notorious Fuzzybutts snuggled up to me) nights.  It’s evolving and may seem a little all over the map but there’s method to this madness! More on the story of our adventures here.

Puppy Up Studios Is

An Idea Lab.  I’ll be launching 1-2 new companies soon and their genesis of the Studios and relevance to the Foundation and the community of companion cancer, will become more apparent in the coming weeks, as I have an ambitious plan for 2018!

A Clearer Path.  While the mission of the Foundation has always been education, awareness and scientific discovery, we’ve learned and grown a lot the past few years.  And it’s important that all of our supporters, sponsors – stakeholders understand how we envision our value within the comparative oncology community, our future plans, and how we intend to get there. We hope to accomplish this here at the Puppy Up Studios.

A Shorter Path. From Problem to Solution. My experiences and observations from the technology industry is their constant drive to both shorten and accelerate cycle times.  From now on, my email is Solutions@PuppyUp.org.  Every single email will be read by me personally and we will work with anyone who has the intent and will and spirit to help us accomplish our mission!

An Open Source Road Map.  I’ve always believed in collaboration but I’ve sat on enough committees to know that it’s almost always one or two people doing the driving.  But what I really hope to accomplish here is more collective ideation and at least a general understanding of where we’re going.

At least, that’s the pie-in-the-sky vision for it but as I mentioned before, this is a fluid process.  And I want to keep it this way for now as it gives us greater ability to adapt, an instinct essential to survival on the road!

Where can you find Puppy Up Studios on the web? Right here.

A breakthrough trial at the University of Minnesota testing a new UMN-developed drug resulted in improved survival rates for dogs diagnosed with a cancer called hemangiosarcoma (HSA).

The results were published today in the journal Molecular Cancer Therapeutics.

“This is likely the most significant advance in the treatment of canine HSA in the last three decades,” said study co-author Jaime Modiano, V.M.D., Ph.D. professor in the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine and member of the Masonic Cancer Center, University of Minnesota.

Canine HSA is a common, aggressive, incurable sarcoma. It is remarkably similar to angiosarcoma, which affects humans. Both cancers typically spread before diagnosis and the survival time for affected patients is extremely short, even with aggressive treatment. Only 50% of humans diagnosed with angiosarcoma live longer than 16 months and the prognosis for dogs with HSA is similarly dire: less than 50% will survive 4-6 months and only about 10% will be alive one-year after their diagnosis.
