May is the month for Go  Fetch! Food Drive for Homeless Animals. Community animal rescue organizations often find this expense in their top two costs. This is a great reminder to help support those in the community who are making it a better place, and it is also a good time to take a look at how one might contribute to their efforts.

So what is “Food Drive for Homeless Animals Month?”

According to “Tails Pet Magazine”, May has been designated as a time to highlight the need to provide food for homeless animals.

They say that there’s no right or wrong way and that it’s okay to be creative. Here are a few examples given by Tails Pet Magazine:

•    Arrange a food drive challenge at schools, your office, churches, civic groups, your condo building or among your friends
•    Set up donation bins at businesses, schools, your office, church, temple, a local grocery store
•    If you own a business, offer discounts to people who bring food donations

According to the ASPCA,  nationwide, between five and seven million companion animals (mostly dogs and cats) are taken into shelters every year—some surrendered by owners, some picked up by municipal animal control services.

To care for homeless dogs and cats, animal welfare organizations are always in need of:

  • Dog food
  • Cat food
  • Cleaning supplies (including laundry detergent and bleach)
  • Paper towels
  • Towels
  • Blankets

Each organization will provide different kinds of space/sleeping arrangements for their guests, so shelters may also need pet bedding, kennels/crates/carriers, etc.

Is there a community food bank in your area? Remember to donate not only food to help people, but dog and cat food as well.  If you already support a food bank, can you give just a little more than usual during May? Imagine the big difference it will make if everyone does just a little bit more to help homeless animals.

For those who have no voice…Thank You!
