Who Will You Honor On World Cancer Day?

World Cancer Day is an international day marked on February 4 to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment, and was founded by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) to support the goals of the World Cancer Declaration,  originally written in 2008. The primary goal of the World Cancer Day is to significantly reduce illness and deaths caused by cancer by 2020.

World Cancer Day targets misinformation, raises awareness, and reduces stigma.  Multiple initiatives run on World Cancer Day to show support for those affected by cancer.

Here’s their official web site. Check out and participate in their interactive live Tweet Map with tweets from around the world.

Welcome to Year of the Dog

Did You Know … 2018 is The Year of the Dog

For the Chinese, (and for The Puppy Up Foundation), this is the Year of the Dog. The dog is the eleventh in the 12-year cycle of Chinese zodiac signs. The Years of the Dog include 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, 2018, 2030, 2042. So, it’s fitting that this year The Puppy Up Foundation is going all out to celebrate the Chinese Year of the Dog. Why? Well, for one thing, our Puppy Up Founder, Luke Robinson, was born in a year of the dog — 1970.

It goes without saying that the dog is man’s best friend — one who can understand the human spirit, whether he is wealthy or not. The Chinese regard the dog as an auspicious animal. And so do we. The Chinese believe if a dog happens to come to a house, it symbolizes the coming of fortune. Many of us have had a dog (or a few dogs) show up on our doorstep. And many times (more often than not) that stray dog has brought us a love we’d never experienced before.

So, to honor the Year of the Dog, The Puppy Up Foundation has much in store in the coming 12 months. Stay tuned to this spot for upcoming announcements and events.

Oh, and just to get you curious about all the things we have in store this year, here’s a teaser Luke did for one of the projects we have coming up. It involves metal, design, dogs, and you — all our supporters and followers.

Our First Spring PuppyUp Walk of 2018 is in Spring, Texas!

Spring, Texas is hosting their second PuppyUp Walk this spring. Won’t you please join us at the Rob Fleming Park & Lodge for a 1 mile walk to promote awareness of canine cancer and fundraise for cancer research to benefit both pets and people.

Many have provided support, sponsorship, participation and the ultimate act of kindness in teaming with us to raise awareness, funds, and continue education in the study of comparative oncology, and the links between canine and human cancer.  And for this, we are eternally grateful.

It’s Time Again For The 3rd Annual Puppy Up Couch Potato Walk!

According to Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary, a couch potato is a  person who spends much time sitting or lying down, usually watching television.

Do you qualify for the 2018 Puppy Up Couch Potato Walk?

Do you spend time in front of the TV, watching old reruns of Lassie, the Adventures of Rin-Tin-Tin, Scooby-Doo, Augie Doggie and Doggie Daddy, Dog with A Blog, Blue’s Clues, The Littlest Hobo, Krypto The Superdog, Here’s Boomer, Paw Patrol, Underdog, White Fang, K-9, or The Mr. Peabody and Sherman Show? Even if you’ve never heard of any of these (really?), you qualify for the 2018 Puppy Up Couch Potato Non-Walk Walk.

If you spend ANY time at all in front of the tube, or reclined on the divan with a favorite book, or sprawled on the couch or lounging in your cozy recliner, talking for hours on the phone, eating chips and drinking your favorite beverages, or even power napping with the occasional expedition to the fridge, you are the very person we’re looking for, and this is the very walk you’ve been looking for! It’s our third annual Puppy Up Couch Potato Walk, designed for those of us who would rather curl up on the couch with our favorite four legged friends and snuggle in front of a glowing TV tube or warm fire in the hearth than brave the wintery elements – or any elements for that matter.

How do you join the Walk?

It’s easy and you don’t even need to move from your comfy place. Click on this link to register, then settle back and let the non-walking begin. The start (and finish) line are totally of your own choosing, and can be whatever length you desire. From here to there. And maybe even back again – if you’re feeling ambitious.

And it’s just as easy to encourage your family, friends, and co-workers to support your efforts in raising in $100 to earn a T-shirt. (Which, by the way, is extremely comfortable for couch surfing.) Just visit your favorite social media sites and put the word out. You can do it in the comfort of your PJs and bunny slippers! And your friends and family can participate in their PJs and slippers too. Seriously. What could be easier or more fun than a couch potato walk?

Fair warning, though. Collecting the T-shirt may require an actual walk to the mailbox!

P.S. – We’d love to see pictures of your favorite couch potato poses – especially if you can get your 4-footed family members to pose with you. Send your photos to erich@puppyup.org and we’ll post them on Facebook. Be sure to include your name and the name of any pups, cats, or people who potato with you.

February Is National Pet Dental Health Month

(“Look, Ma. No cavities!”)

February is National Pet Dental Health Month

From AVMA

Don’t turn your nose to Fido’s or Fluffy’s bad breath! That odor might signify a serious health risk, with the potential to damage not only your pet’s teeth and gums but its internal organs as well.

To address the significance of oral health care for pets, the AVMA sponsors National Pet Dental Health Month every February. Click on the links below to learn more about  how you can improve the dental (and overall) health of your pets.

Watch

Dr. Sheldon Rubin gives easy, step-by-step instructions on how to teach a dog or cat to accept a daily tooth brushing. He also describes healthy treats, and explains the true risks of periodontal disease in pets.

Periodontal disease is the most common clinical condition in cats and dogs even though it’s completely preventable. Dr. Cindy Charlier explains what periodontal disease is and how we can prevent our pets from getting it.

Listen

Dr. Jan Bellows, a former president of the American Veterinary Dental College and owner of All Pets Dental in Weston, Fla., discussed the importance of dental health for our pets in an interview for our Animal Tracks podcast series.

Remember

While February is National Pet Dental Health Month, dental health should be a daily ritual for pet owners all year long.

Pup of the Month

Pup of the Month — Trac Durr
(By Jennifer Durr) This is my soul dog, Trac, who we call Trac”durr” because of our last name. He is a Blue Merle Border Collie who needed a home and literally jumped into our laps and rescued us when he was four months old. Trac was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in December of 2013, has undergone an intensive surgery to remove a mass the size of two grapefruits and completed over a year’s worth of chemotherapy. He is a playful, loving, energetic best friend who absolutely loves his Frisbee and swimming. As a family enduring this heartbreak, we are committed to helping in efforts to prevent other four-legged family members from experiencing this horrible diagnosis.

(Trac was a contestant in the 2016 Puppy Up “Cancer Can’t Keep a Good Dog Down” Calendar Contest.)
