Every day, from now until our calendar contest ends on October 1st, we’ll feature several of our calendar dog contestants. We’d like you to meet Rizzo.
Shelties Forever’s Story
(by Judy Barnhart) Rizzo was just one of many rescued shelties we were fortunate enough to have in our home. Abandoned by his own family, he fit right in with the rest of our clan of rescues.
Of the shelties that we’ve adopted over the years, one-third of them have been taken from us due to cancer of one form or another. Rizzo was no exception. He was such a sweet boy who had the biggest paws I’ve ever seen on a sheltie. We called them polar bear paws. In 2009 Rizzo had one of his eyes removed due to cancer. This didn’t stop him from living life to the fullest. He never complained or felt sorry for himself. He just went on being “Rizzo” and ruling his territory.
Then this past March of 2011 his cancer came back. This time in his prostate. He fought like the trooper he was until he could fight no more. Rizzo lost his valiant battle in May of 2011 and went on to join his other siblings who were waiting for him on the other side of the Bridge.
No sheltie (or any other dog) lives forever – we all know that. But if something could be done to prolong their lifespan without cancer and pain, we must do what we can to work towards that milestone.
