Every day, from now until our calendar contest ends on October 1st, we’ll feature several of our calendar dog contestants. We’d like you to meet Maggie Crawley.
Maggie’s Story
(by Ashley Crawley) “Free dog to a good home” read the ad and this fresh-out-of-college Florida gal couldn’t resist. I snatched her up and named her Maggie and with that, an unforgettable bond was formed.
She was a lovable mess of a puppy who enjoyed eating cheese (and kitty litter), jumping on people, sitting on the furniture and escaping through any open door. Despite these comical shortcomings, her fan base grew rapidly and broadly.
We moved to California to take on a new adventure together and to our world we added Bayard, who Maggie fully believed hung the sun, the moon and the stars.
And then something happened. Before my eyes, she turned into a well-behaved and gentle superstar – with enough lingering orneriness for character.
The life of every party and the leader of every hike, Maggie lived life to the absolute fullest and was always the first to jump into an open car door, usually without knowing where we were going or what we were doing. We should all live with such faith and unabashed enthusiasm.
Her sweet disposition and gentle nature transcended being a dog, this we’re sure of. She was that agreeable, kind and impactful to anyone and everyone she met, especially children and her big family.
Unbeknownst to many, she courageously battled T-cell lymphoma for 9 months, although you would never have known it given the miles she hiked, amount she swam or smiles (yes, dogs do smile) she shared. She was an amazingly brave, vivacious pup right up until the end and we are grateful for the 10 awesome years we had with her and what she brought to our world. We gave her the rest she so rightfully needed and deserved on Friday, August 26, 2011.
She was an absolute angel to us (and will continue to be) and will be dearly, sorely and deeply missed. We hope we honored the original ad and gave you a good home, sweet Maggie May. You certainly made ours. Thanks for teaching us so many life lessons… we know you’re bounding in heaven.
