From Tru Dog
Are you tired of trudging off to work every day while your pup lies around at home? Well today is Pet Owner Independence Day, a day when we humans get to reverse roles with our pets and spend the day lounging in a sunbeam. While we don’t often refer to ourselves as “pet owners” because, really, who owns whom around here, we do like to celebrate all those things that make our dogs wonderful. This topsy-turvy holiday is all about living life like your dog does every day. So go chase the ball, embrace the five second rule, and relax in that sunbeam. Work can wait.
While the spirit of this holiday is to reverse roles with your dog, we’re betting you’ll have a difficult time getting the dog to compose an email, balance the checkbook, or keep that meeting with a client (unless there’s ham involved, dogs will do anything for ham). So why not conserve your energy and enjoy the day WITH your dog? Here are a few celebratory ideas to get you started.
- Go fishing, and if you forget to bring along the poles, just poke at the fish with sticks and play in the water. It’s what your dog likes best anyway.
- Play fetch. And when you’re done, play fetch again. You can never throw the ball too many times.
- Chase the cat. Despite popular belief, the cat actually enjoys this game. At least that’s what the dog tells me.
- Eat new things. Try something new, even if smells a little funky.
- Run some zoomies around the house. Your dog can show you the best routes.
- Nap on the couch. The laundry can wait.
- Sit in the sun. Vitamin D is a good thing.
- Learn something new. Even old dogs can learn new tricks. Keep your brain active.
- Howl at the moon. You might find it’s very freeing.
- Cuddle with someone you love. They’ll thank you for it.
