April 11 is National Pet Day! This holiday is all about appreciating and celebrating the wonderful pets in our lives. Did you know that there are approximately 86.4 million pet cats and 78.2 million pet dogs living in the United States today? Not to mention all the gerbils, snakes, birds, and other animals people have come to love and adopt.

Animal welfare advocate Colleen Paige founded National Pet Day to raise awareness about the importance of pet adoption. The motto of the holiday is “Don’t shop! Adopt!”

A Few Ways to Celebrate National Pet Day:

Adopt a pet from your local shelter or pure breed rescue organization. But please make sure you have the time to devote to taking care of your pet. It’s a life-time commitment.

Volunteer at your local shelter and offer to care for the animals.

Donate blankets, food and toys to a favorite animal welfare organization.

Assist an ill, elderly or a financially struggling neighbor or friend by purchasing pet food or needed items for their pets.

Buy your pet a fun new toy….or two…or five.

There are so many neglected and unwanted animals waiting for some love and attention. You can donate your time, or you can donate food or other supplies. Every little bit helps.
