Ways to celebrate National Dog Day

1. Take your dog to the beach or on a hike through the fields or woods.
2. Take lots of pictures with your dog.
3. Get your dog a new collar or leash. You can never have too many fancy collars or harnesses.
4. Teach your dog a new activity.
5. Give your dog a massage  — it’s good for the both of you.
6. Give your dog a good grooming. This is a pleasant way to bond and show your love.
7. If your dog is well behaved, take him or her to a dog park and play, play, play. But watch out if it’s hot out. Don’t overdo. Have plenty of water.
8. Buy your dog a fun new toy … or two … or three.
9. Assist an ill or elderly neighbor by walking and/or grooming their dog.
10. Write your Congressman and ask that s/he support the ban on puppy mills and gas chambers in your state.
11. Donate blankets, food, and toys to an animal welfare organization.
12. Have a safety check at home to make sure it’s safe for your dog and others.
13. Make a disaster plan and outfit a disaster kit with all the things you’ll need for your pup in an emergency. Don’t forget vaccination papers, extra leashes and collars with name/address/phone number tags.
14. Volunteer at your local shelter or rescue. Not just today but often. They can always use the help.
15. Just enjoy the day with your pup. Jump in puddles, stretch out in the sun, share a vanilla ice cream cone.

About National Dog Day

National Dog Day is celebrated August 26th annually and was founded in 2004 by Pet & Family Lifestyle Expert and Animal Advocate, Colleen Paige, also the founder of National Puppy Day, National Mutt Day and National Cat Day and many more philanthropic days to bring attention to the plight of animals and encourage adoption. The date of August 26th is significant, as it’s the date that Colleen’s family adopted her first dog “Sheltie” when Colleen was 10 years old.

National Dog Day celebrates all dogs, mixed breed and pure. Their mission is to help galvanize the public to recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year and acknowledges family dogs and dogs that work selflessly each day to save lives, keep us safe and bring comfort. Dogs put their lives on the line every day … for personal protection, for law enforcement, for the disabled, for our freedom and safety by detecting bombs and drugs and pulling victims of tragedy from wreckage, now they’re detecting cancer and seizures … things even humans cannot do.

If you’d like to learn more about National Dog Day, please check out their official web page here.

Dogs do so many wonderful, loving, and heroic things for us. It’s only right we celebrate them!
