Honey Bunz

Honey Bunz

(Elisa Townshend)  What do you say about a little dog who changed your life?  My son bought Honey Bunz in 2003 and at that time I knew very little about Pit Bulls.  It wasn’t long though before I fell in love with her.  She grew up to be the sweetest girl you could imagine; very lively, always game to jump into the water or check out a new trail.  Even when she was 12 years old she could still hike a good 9 miles.  She cuddled every night in the bed with me.

Honey Bunz suffered several episodes of mast cell skin cancer.  The third time the vet recommended I drive her to CSU Veterinary School in Fort Collins to see what they could do. She underwent 7 rounds of chemotherapy, and loved on the hospital staff the whole time. Before the final round of chemo, an ultrasound found a mass on her spleen.  Unfortunately, the chemo hadn’t worked as planned. We tried one other type of medication, which made her sick, so I decided enough was enough.  She waited for my son to return home from his job in North Carolina and we ended her suffering on April 28th of this year exactly two months shy of her 13th birthday.

The photo of Honey Bunz running in the snow was taken by my niece’s father.  He offered to take pictures of my dogs in every season. This was one of the final photos he took in February 2014. The following May he passed away from colon cancer that had gone un-diagnosed because his doctor assumed his complaints were related to his chronic renal failure.
